Many dress to impress but for all the wrong reasons ! Ego and pride motivate many to dress immodest.Many invest a lot of time and money on 'what to wear' but this post is on what God wants you to wear.Many do not invest any time and effort in growing in godliness and expressing godly character.
Godly clothes come from a godly character in Christ.So this post is about your 'spiritual clothes.' These godly clothes will make a lasting impression on many !!
Yes we must dress modest as the bible teaches but we must also 'wear our spiritual clothes that express who we are in Christ.'
WHAT ARE THESE GODLY CLOTHES ? Ephesians 4:24"And put ye on the new man ,which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." We must put on the fresh clean clothes of our new life in Christ which will be seen by living a holy life !
WHAT DOES A HOLY LIFE REALLY LOOK LIKE IN OUR DAILY LIVES ?
Colossians 3:12-14 "Put on therefore,as the elect of God ,holy and beloved ,bowels of mercies ,kindness ,humbleness of mind ,meekness ,longsuffering, forbearing one another ,and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any:even as Christ forgave you,so also do ye.And above all things put on love,which is the bond of perfectness."
The words 'put on' means 'to clothe with like a garment.'We put on our regular clothes and we are commanded here to put on our spiritual clothes.
We must put on these beautiful godly garments, these godly character qualities that work within relationships you have with others.Notice twice it says,'one another'.
Romans 12:5'So we,being many,are one body in Christ,and every one members one of another.'
Life is all about relationships.None of us lives in solitary confinement.We daily relate with others don't we? Even here on face book !
These are the godly clothes of our new life and new nature we have in Christ Jesus.People notice and see clothes and they need to see these holy clothes as they relate to us where ever we are.
NOTICE WE ARE CALLED THE ELECT OF GOD ,HOLY AND BELOVED !
Here are the articles of our godly clothes that we are to wear all the time.
1.Bowels of Mercies ! This means 'put on the clothes of heartfelt compassion.'The Lord is full of compassion and was moved with compassion and met the needs of others.Matthew said Jesus was moved with compassion and we must follow His example ! Do you have a heart of compassion? Do you have a genuine sensitivity for those in need ? Are you a merciful person who will sacrifice to meet the needs of others ? Psalm 86:15 "But thou ,O Lord are a God full of compassion,and gracious ,longsuffering and plenteous in mercy and truth.' His character must be expressed through us if He indwells us !
2.Kindness ! You must wear the 'clothes of kindness.'We live in a very ugly ,nasty ,cruel world full of unkind mean people.But as new creations in Jesus we are to be kind.This means you have an unselfish spirit.Acting charitably towards others is being kind.Its an attitude of godly affection and goodwill that is motivated to help others.
Eph.4:32' Be ye kind one to another.'
3.Humbleness of mind ! We must be 'clothed with humility' and not be rude and puffed up with pride and arrogance.We need to esteem others better than ourselves. The person with a humble attitude thinks of others first and not of himself. 1st Peter 5:5 says to ' be clothed with humility'. Humility means the absence of pride and not being boastful.A humble person gives honor and credit to the Lord and does not seek to be noticed and praised.
4.Meekness ! Meekness does not mean weakness. W.E.Vine says ,'Meekness is the opposite of self-assertiveness and self-interest.' The meek person does not need to explode with anger because he displays self-control.A meek person is considerate of others and submissive to his Lord.He has a gentle spirit even in difficult circumstance and relationships.'
Many times we fail to act with meekness toward others.We can fail to be gentle and can seek to dominate and intimidate others.A meek attitude avoids being brash and abrupt and will show respect and not degrade and belittle others just to make themselves look superior.
5.Longsuffering ! We must put on the 'godly clothes of longsuffering' which means ,'long temper' which is the opposite of being'short tempered and being a angry hot head. Longsuffering speaks of 'patience under provocation and of long endurance under offense.' Are you patient with people who 'get on your nerves' and who irritate you? When people hurt you and mistreat you are you patient with them or do you go on the attack?
As one man said,'When a person is longsuffering,he can put up with provoking people or circumstances without retaliating.The short -tempered person speaks and acts impulsively and lacks self-control.'
Well are you wearing these godly clothes my friend? As you can see there is more to put on that we cannot cover in this post like putting on forbearance and forgiveness and love.I encourage you to study this passage and seek the Lord and ask for more of the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit to help you to dress with godly clothes at all times.
