A family experienced a moment of joy after a weekend of sorrow when they discovered their dog alive among the rubble of their home destroyed during a deadly mudslide.
The Kuntz family was out at a baseball game on Saturday. But when they returned home they were shocked to find it destroyed. The mudslide in Darrington, Washington, had flattened their home while their Labrador Retriever, Buddy, and their cat were inside.
The family's home had been dragged more than 100 feet down the hill and their beloved aunt, Linda McPherson, who lived next door, was killed. Reports say there are 14 dead and as many as 176 people still unaccounted for.
Given the extent of the destruction they had given up hope of finding their pets alive. The following day, members of the family were seeing what they could salvage at the family farm when they heard Buddy whimpering.
Buddy was covered in dust and debris when he was pulled out and had some scrapes and bruises but otherwise was remarkably good! He was able to stand up and shake off the dirt and greet his family.
"I just broke down crying, really happy that my dog was alright," young Quinton told KBOI. "I'm just shocked how well he did against my whole house falling on him."
"We have lost a great, great sister, but we're a strong family and we're going to get through this," said Linda's sister, Irene Kuntz.
The family has one thing to celebrate in otherwise tragic circumstances.
After finding Buddy and losing their cat, the Kuntz family is now helping rescue other animals. They found their aunt Linda's cat on Monday.
