The promise of the New Covenant is the the Lord will plant his holy fear in our hearts when we are born again ! Those who walk in the fear of the Lord will hate sin and will obey the Lord ! They will not turn away from Him.
So hating evil and delighting in obeying God are clear expressions of the fear of God.
Proverbs 8:13'The fear of the Lord is to hate evil.' Many compromise with secret sin because they do not fear the Lord.They need to examine themselves to see if they are in the faith.
Psalm 112:1'Praise ye the Lord.Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord,that delighteth greatly in His commandments.'
There is joy in obedience when you fear the Lord !
Psalm 128:1'Blessed is everyone that fears the Lord;that walketh in His ways.'
Obedience is the fruit of the tree of which the fear of God is the root.We cannot rightly follow and obey God if we do not fear Him.We must honor,reverence and love Him.
1.We need a healthy ,fearful respect for the holiness of God!
2.To fear the Lord is to dread the very thought of displeasing Him!
3.To fear the Lord is to humble yourself in His presence!
4.Fearing God is not the same as being afraid of God !Being afraid of someone drives you away from them, but fearing the Lord who is your Father draws you close to Him.You are in awe of His power,His love,His holiness and His majesty !
Psalm 5:7'But as for me,I will come into Thy house in the multitude of Thy mercies:and in Thy fear will I worship toward Thy holy temple.'Notice the connection of the mercy of God ,the fear of God and the worship of God !
5.Fearing the Lord motivates you to do your best to please the Lord and to avoid anything that would offend Him.
Proverbs 3:7'Be not wise in thine own eyes:fear the Lord,and depart from evil.'
6.A healthy fear of God is knowing that He did not give you what you did deserve which was damnation in Hell ,but He poured out His grace upon you and saved you from sin and hell.
7.Walking in the fear of God is a lifestyle that realizes that there is a all-wise,all-powerful ,all-holy God who holds us accountable for our conduct !
1st Peter 1:17'And if ye call on the Father who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work ,pass the time of your sojourning here in fear.'
As pilgrims we live our lives here in the reverent fear of the Lord.This is not a fear of a ruthless master ,but a healthy and fervent respect and fear for the all-powerful God who is our holy Father.
Such a holy fear is not inconsistent with our love for God or our understanding of His love for us.Rather,it is a fear of offending Him, of taking Him for granted and becoming sloppy in our Christian lives.We should not assume that our privileged status as God's children gives us freedom to abuse the grace of God and live as we please.We must live to please Him not ourselves!
We are not spoiled children doing what we want we are grateful children with a deep ,deep reverence for the Lord and we show it by obeying Him.
Heb.12:28'Let us have grace ,whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.'
